Assessing Host-Virus Codivergence for Close Relatives of Merkel Cell Polyomavirus Infecting African Great Apes.

UNLABELLED It has long been hypothesized that polyomaviruses (PyV; family Polyomaviridae) codiverged with their animal hosts. In contrast, recent analyses suggested that codivergence may only marginally influence the evolution of PyV. We reassess this question by focusing on a single lineage of PyV infecting hominine hosts, the Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) lineage. By characterizing the gen...

African great apes are naturally infected with polyomaviruses closely related to Merkel cell polyomavirus.

The oncogenic Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) infects humans worldwide, but little is known about the occurrence of viruses related to MCPyV in the closest phylogenetic relatives of humans, great apes. We analyzed samples from 30 wild chimpanzees and one captive gorilla and identified two new groups of polyomaviruses (PyVs). These new viruses are by far the closest relatives to MCPyV described...

Merkel cell polyomavirus infection and host defence in patients with Merkel cell carcinoma

Background and purpose: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and often aggressive skin cancer that usually arises in elderly individuals. MCC is frequently associated with ultraviolet radiation exposure and immunosuppressive conditions. The majority of MCCs harbor Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV), a newly discovered human cancer virus. Several studies have indicated its importance in MCC tumor...

Merkel Cell Polyomavirus Strains in Patients with Merkel Cell Carcinoma

We investigated whether Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) patients in France carry Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) and then identified strain variations. All frozen MCC specimens and 45% of formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded specimens, but none of the non-MCC neuroendocrine carcinomas specimens, had MCPyV. Strains from France and the United States were similar.

Merkel Cell Polyomavirus DNA in Persons without Merkel Cell Carcinoma

Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) DNA was detected in 88% of Merkel cell carcinomas in contrast to 16% of other skin tumors. MCPyV was also found in anogenital and oral samples (31%) and eyebrow hairs (50%) of HIV-positive men and in forehead swabs (62%) of healthy controls. MCPyV thus appears to be widespread.
